Abstract/Summary:
The rapid increase in the demand for digital broadband services and the consequent increase in the volume of generated traffic in our communication networks have motivated the necessity to implement next generation networks in our territories at minimum cost. Although there are a lot of possibilities nowadays, the development has not been stopped yet. New digital broadband sometimes based on a new technique, others are an improvement of previous version.;In this thesis we will address three parts; first part will be on the possibilities and the challenges of providing a high speed, multiple service access at low cost, services such as internet, television, and telephony. To achieve this, a passive optical network (PON) will be used, which is defined in three different standards. Each standard describes a PON network based on different technique. These standards are called Broadband PON (BPON), Gigabit-capable PON (GPON), and Ethernet PON (EPON). In the second part we will analyze these three different standards by their performance, physical properties and implementation. Finally, we will provide some suggestions on these three standards and which one is the best digital broadband network for users.
