| This interdisciplinary study advances the relation between conflict, conflict resolution and the role of media. This thesis examines the role of national and local media in the Kashmir conflict.;This thesis focuses on the difference in coverage given to the Kashmir conflict by two different categories of newspapers, i.e. national and local newspapers. A content analysis of 440 newspaper articles was conducted to examine the coverage of the conflict during the summer of 2010. Based on Galtung's (1986, 1998) war/peace journalism framework, the results show that the local newspapers are much more likely to promote separatist ideology whereas the national newspaper mostly project the government policy and ideas. The study also found out that there is a remarkable difference between the types of coverage given to the Kashmir conflict by two different categories of the newspapers. The thesis throws light on the basic fact that both the sets of newspapers promote their ideology, whereas the common reader only gets to read what these newspapers want them to read. |
