Abstract/Summary:
Reality Window Manager is a user interface for mediated reality that allows the user to interact with a body-worn computer in everyday situations by way of a vision-based gesture recognizer. The interface allows the user to point, click, place, resize, and rotate applications using physical actions directly on virtual objects in a manner that resembles the way one manipulates physical objects. Camera-based image registration is used to keep the virtual and physical objects aligned. The computational demands of real-time image processing, however, can exceed even the fastest CPU. In contrast, the GPU is well suited for real-time image processing tasks, and a parallel-CPU architecture can provide even greater computing resources. GPU implementations of the image registration and hand tracking algorithms are shown to have improved performance and accuracy. It has been demonstrated that parallel computer-graphics hardware can profoundly impact architectures for real-time mediated reality.
