Abstract/Summary:
In this work, the river-floodplain system has been treated as a coupled one- to two-dimensional system. The principal watercourse has been treated using a full dynamic one-dimensional numerical model based on Riemann solvers coupled with a two-dimensional floodplain model based on a simplified approximation to the dynamic equations. The formulation used allows wetting and drying episodes on the floodplain to be treated quite easily. Furthermore, during the recession curve of the flood, as the zero depth water line retreats, the model is able to predict areas of ponding left in topographic depressions in the floodplain. Due to the simplified version of the governing equations used, the celerity of a rapidly advancing or retreating front is not expected to be modeled accurately.; The possibility of pollution sources in the floodplain (for example fertilizer and pesticide storage facilities, industrial wastes, etc.) being submerged during the flood and forming pollutant plumes that may disperse the pollutants in the flooded areas has been incorporated into the formulation.
