Abstract/Summary:
Alessandro Besozzi (1702--1793) was a celebrated Italian oboe virtuoso and composer. This document consists of a scholarly edition of Besozzi's Concerto No. 3 in D Major for Oboe, Horns, Violins, Viola, and Basso Continuo, and secondarily provides an essay describing his contributions and influence. The concerto is the third in a set of six found in the Furst Thurn and Taxis Library in Regensburg, Germany, and this edition is based upon a photo-reproduction of the orchestral parts. The scholarly edition is faithful to Besozzi's original manuscript with the addition of a historically appropriate harpsichord part, realized by Julia Ageyeva. The various articulation and dynamic markings found in Besozzi's original parts were analyzed, compared and made consistent throughout the score. This project makes the concerto accessible so that it can takes its rightful place in the oboe repertoire.
