Abstract/Summary:
The objectives of the present study are to compare the effects of individual purified c9, t11 and t10, c12 conjugated linoleic (CLA) isomers with linoleic acid (LA) as well as to compare the effects of c9, t11+t10, c12 and c9, t11+t8, c10 CLA mixtures with c9, t11, t10, c12 CLA isomers and LA on lipoprotein profile, hepatic lipids, body composition and fecal fat content, under dietary controlled condition in hamsters. After 28 days of experimental diet, t10, c12 CLA fed animals showed higher level of LDL-cholesterol than those who ingested LA and c9, t11 CLA. On the other hand, t10, c12 CLA consumption decreased hepatic cholesterol and triglycerides and increased fecal fat content compared with the other two groups. Under the present experimental conditions, t10, c12 CLA induced undesirable higher LDL-cholesterol although it reduced hepatic lipids and fat digestibility in hamsters. The c9, t11+t10, c12 CLA mixture showed higher LDL-cholesterol concentrations than LA, c9, t11 purified CLA isomer and the c9, t11+t8, c10 CLA mixture. On the other hand, the c9, t11+t8, c10 CLA mixture induced higher plasma VLDL cholesterol and triglycerides than LA and individual purified c9, t11 and t10, c12 CLA isomers. Similarly to t10, c12 CLA, the c9, t11+t10, c12 CLA mixture decreased hepatic cholesterol and increased fecal fat content as compared to LA, c9, t11 purified CLA isomer and the c9, t11+t8, c10 CLA mixture. No differences on body composition were noted between the five groups. The present results suggest that the effects of the c9, t11+t10, c12 CLA mixture are attributed to the presence of t10, c12 CLA. Moreover, under the present experimental conditions, results show deterioration in plasma VLDL-triglycerides and cholesterol with the c9, t11+t8, c10 CLA mixture, and in plasma LDL-cholesterol with the individual t10, c12 purified CLA isomer and the c9, t11+t10, c12 CLA mixture although lowering effects have been observed in hepatic cholesterol and fat digestibility.
