Abstract/Summary:
The hog industry practices have been under attack for the past few years in Quebec and especially the management of pig manure surplus. Since the hog farms have been concentrated in several parts of the province, the quantities of nitrogen and phosphorus from animal droppings far exceed the capacity of the soil to absorb these substances. Many alternate solutions of landfarming have been proposed to retrieve the natural balance and lighten the environmental pressure. BiofertileRTM, which is a complete and integrated solution allowing economic treatment of liquid pig manure, is one of these promising solutions developed by Envirogain Inc.; The aim of this work was to determine the viability of an MBR to upgrade a pre-existent treatment line (Biofertile line), to determine the best location for the MBR in the treatment line and to study the impact of hydraulic retention time on the treatment efficiency. The following effluent targets have been set independently of the hydrology of the site: 5 mg SS/1, 5 mg BOD5 /1, 10 mg NH4-N/1, 1 mg Ptot/1 and 200 CFU/100 ml of fecal coliforms.
