Abstract/Summary:
The poems in this collection are narrative in nature and steeped in polyphony. The speakers in these poems range in age, gender, and time period, but they all share the universal trait of hunger: for food and sex and ambition, as is most obvious, but above all, a hunger for recognition, to be seen and heard. These speakers yearn and struggle, but above all refuse to be silenced. From female Biblical characters breaking free from the confinement of a male-driven narrative, to a young boy in Japan refusing to leave his room to face the anxiety of societal pressure, these poems strive to be seen and heard just like the voices they contain inside.
