The Study Of The Classification Of Meng Haoran's Poems

Meng Haoran, though he has no official rank in his life, occupies an important position in the history of Chinese poetry with his matchless and rhyming poems, as one of the most important representative figures of the landscape and pastoral poetry in the Tang Dynasty. Therefore, a number of contemporary and later poets and scholars intensively study his poems from different angles. Contemporaries studying Meng Haoran's poems only from the angle of the poetry category are ,Wang Shiyuan, who was born in Yi Cheng, writes a preface to his collection of poems ; Liu Chenweng, who was a poet in the end of the Southern Song Dynasty , conducts a comprehensive comment on his poems; and also Wang Huibin, a modern scholar. Their research provides a valuable research data for future generations in grasping the life of Meng Haoran, generalizing the artistic feature of his poems and reunderstanding the status of Meng Haoran in the history of Chinese poetry. However, there are many inadequacies in their study. Therefore, this article is divided into three chapters from the angle of category, and studies further the classification of Meng Haoran's poems. Chapter One generalizes the study of academia on the classification of Meng Haoran's poems, and points out advantages and disadvantages. Chapter Two defines the standard again based on the study on Meng's poems by our predecessors, classifies his 262 poems like this, Landscape Poems, Pastoral Poems, Farewell Poems and Sighing Poems. It also presents the new classification in the form of table according to the theme. Chapter Three makes the great significance of the study by classifying on Meng's poems clear.Through the study on Meng's poems by reclassifying , the characteristics of his non-landscape poems which are neglected appear. This is beneficial for readers to understanding the original meaning of Meng's poems and seeking the distinctive character of literary history about Meng's poems, so that people can grasp Meng Haoran's poems'important status of literary history and far-reaching influence on later generations.
