Responding to a health information crisis: Factors affecting the recruitment and retention of Nova Scotian health record professionals

Abstract/Summary:
The demand for health information is driven by many facets, including cost containment, efficiency, accessibility, service planning, population health, and quality of care. In Nova Scotia, there is a growing shortage of health record professionals, the professionals responsible for collecting, maintaining and analyzing the information used to make effective decisions.;The author discusses the methods and results of primary research strategies employed to identify resources and characteristics of Nova Scotian health records professionals and to forecast shortages of Nova Scotian health record professionals.;To conclude, reflections and recommendations are provided. It is emphasized that there will continue to be a shortage of health record professionals; that demand for the information these professionals provide will increase; and that before recruitment and retention strategies can be effective, underlying issues such as value, recognition and professional growth need to be addressed by the profession, its employers and its information users.
