Abstract/Summary:
The American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) Objective Grading System was developed to provide a more objective method of evaluating dental casts and radiographs. This study was conducted to determine if the ABO Objective Grading System could be accurately assessed from digital dental casts and to determine if there were any statistical differences between digital and plaster dental casts. Thirty digital and thirty plaster casts were compared. The Wilcoxon test for paired samples showed significant differences (p < 0.05) for occlusal contacts, occlusal relationships, and the total score. Buccolingual inclination was not included in this study. Mean differences of points deducted ranged from .03 points for marginal ridges to 5.07 points for total score. The variable that showed the most points deducted was occlusal relationships while interproximal contacts showed the least points deducted. Based on this study, the current OrthoCAD program (Version 2.2) is not adequate for scoring cases.
