Abstract/Summary:
Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer worldwide and the leading cause of cancer mortality among women in developing countries. Developing nations often have neither the manpower nor the funds to implement the cervical cancer screening techniques used in developed nations. With this work, we present the SMU Cervical Cancer Screening Platform (SCCSP), a mobile hardware and software platform for image processing which could facilitate automation of the screening process for cervical cancer. An automated screening process would allow minimally trained individuals to successfully conduct cervical cancer screens, empowering resource-limited regions to save lives by screening more of their population. This research demonstrates the utility of an active auto-focus system to ensure image quality during the cervical image acquisition process.
