Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study was to conduct and in-depth analysis on the Tax Equity and Fiscal Responsibility Act (TEFRA) of 1982, section 122, hospice care. TEFRA was created to reduce Medicare costs and to provide rights for the terminally ill. Individuals who have less than six months to live now have more choices in regards to their end-of-life care. Hospice uses an interdisciplinary team approach with physicians, nurses, social workers and counselors to provide individuals with not only pain management but psychosocial needs as well.;The results of this study indicate that the objectives of the policy have been met to a certain extent but more efficient measurement tools are needed to adequately measure cost effectiveness and quality of care for the dying. Although hospice users have increased throughout the years, many barriers still exist. Limitations, recommendations for future research, policy and practice are also discussed.
