Abstract/Summary:
The abstract paintings in Propelled Aft were the result of my investigations into visual phenomena produced from glassy substances. The interference caused by the glare off these substances provided me with three notions that led me through the project. First, I equated these "interference surfaces" to a plane of the picture that formed a gap between work and viewer. Like the physical surface, this surface in my paintings at once repelled and attracted the viewer with strange facts. This surface acts as a conduit to explaining the reaction a viewer has toward a painting, wherein emotive energy flows. Secondly, "holes" in paintings (not just mine), as I discovered, evidence the painter's processes and give clues to the third notion: peripheral events in and out of the studio influence the painter's work on the canvas. In the beginning the content of my report depicted an exterior world, but through process, the works reflected an internal world.
