This thesis focuses on the role architecture plays in the development of urban communities. The studies of historic and urban patterns are used to create a strategy which will help to develop and sustain an urban community. As part of the strategy a mixed use building type is considered which will promote residential livability and commercial vitality.; At an urban level, the proposal re-establishes historic connections between the city streets and the Chelsea District, while breaking barriers created by parking lots and auto related uses.; The investigation for this thesis is in Manhattan's lower Chelsea in an area of the city where most of its land is under used. I propose that design of multi-use buildings will enhance the profile and development of the Chelsea District. |
