Abstract/Summary:
The fourth dimension, according to mathematical theory, is a spatial expansion of the third and physical dimension. It expands the current space into a direction perpendicular to those currently known. It is not left and right, nor forward and back, nor up and down. It is a new, undefined direction. The question is what if architecture was allowed to expand into this allusive fourth dimension? What would it reveal about the architecture and how would it be beneficial to the design? This thesis plans to explore these topics by proposing that the fourth dimension should expand on the physical world within the platform of the Internet. By designing a three-dimensional physical and four-dimensional virtual pavilion for the country of Andorra in Expo 2010 Shanghai, it will be shown that the expansion into the higher dimension will reveal new architectural ideas and elements not performed or capable within the lower.
