The wood supply system is the network of businesses and operations involved in purchasing standing timber from landowners, in managing harvesting and transportation operations and in primary processing of raw material. The Mississippi wood supply system has evolved from the earlier era of exploitation and agricultural expansion and has been shaped by social, political, industrial, transportation, and technological developments. Mississippi's forest industry and forest based economy is in a state of flux brought about by changing markets, international competition, industry restructuring and other economic forces, pressures, and changes. Mississippi must evaluate its entire forest economy looking for efficiencies and opportunities to improve the functioning and evolving wood supply system. |
