Abstract/Summary:
This study asks how Hoover Mechanical Heating and Plumbing Ltd. can attract workers in the labour-starved Alberta economy. The development of non-traditional sources of labour can provide an equal opportunity for cross-sections of society that are not traditionally employed as skilled tradespeople. This opportunity is significant in that it may enable underutilized sources of labour to meet industry demand for workers while promoting career choice equity for anyone. Research will be conducted by interviewing trades managers, employees, apprentices, and trades instructors of varied ages and genders. This study focuses on three themes: understanding and affecting culture in the workplace, workplace emotional intelligence, and developing workplace diversity. Recommendations will be based on the study of the attraction of workers through Hoover Mechanical Plumbing and Heating Ltd., but may have a far broader scope of application within the skilled trades community and beyond.
