A population boom and tremendous increase in natural resource consumption have made sustainable development necessary and imperative. The purpose of this study was to collect information on current knowledge and techniques of sustainable design and apply them to the programming and conceptual design of a visitors center for a proposed environmental education center on the existing Logan/Cache County landfill. During the process, relevant literature was reviewed, similar projects were studied and a site inventory and analysis of the landfill was conducted. The results were then used to develop a master plan for the visitors center and surrounding landscape that includes suggestions for floor plans, elevations, building materials, and programming guidelines categorized as: environmentally friendly, water conservation, energy efficiency, and indoor health. The primary objective of this study was to facilitate various activities, including education, interactive sessions, self-directed learning, exploration, and recreation, as well as to provide the public with an example of materials recycling and energy and water saving from the perspectives of both architecture and landscape architecture.
