| My thesis examines the presence of French colonial law in Francophone colonial and post-colonial literature and cinema. It thoroughly analyzes the legal guidelines for slavery established as the Black Code, and documents how they are fictionalized in the literatures from West Africa, North Africa, and the Caribbean. My thesis theorizes that the 1685 Black Code paved the way for an unwritten "Colonial Code", which still has ramifications in today's immigration laws in post-colonial France. |
