Abstract/Summary:
This study examines the delivery of electrical power to remote sensor application circuits over optical media. In a number of remote sensor applications there is a recognized need for a power deliver media which is electromagnetically inert and highly resistant to any potential effects of the environment through which it passes. Power delivery over optical fiber offers a solution to this need. In this thesis, a power delivery system comprised of a laser optical power source and a photovoltaic power converter coupled via multimode optical fiber is studied. A model of the power delivery system is created using a computer based simulation program, Simulink. Modeling is used to characterize the behavior of the power delivery system allowing for the development of a remote sensor application circuit. This is followed by experiments which analyze the capacity and efficiency of the power delivery system to the application circuit, and comparison of the performance of the experimental solution to that of the model.
