Communication techniques of sports information directors in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference

Abstract/Summary:
This action research project examined sports information director's perceptions of what is the most preferred type of communication in the profession. Thirty sports information directors from 14 different schools in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference were surveyed. The research project included analysis of the roles of the profession, evolution and advances made, and communication theories and forms of communication important to a sports information director. The results revealed the preferred type of communication was email; however it also revealed the older sports information directors preferred to communicate with the media in person whereas younger sports information directors relied on email. Results of this study provided relevant information for sports information directors to advance their communication techniques and effectiveness in the profession. It also revealed areas for further research.
