Abstract/Summary:
In networks that support quality of service (QoS), a connection admission control (CAC) algorithm is used to determine whether or not a new traffic flow can be admitted to the network, so that all users will meet their required performance. The interest in CAC algorithms stems from the need for a network user and a network provider to forge an agreement on the quality of service in order for a new network connection to occur. Traditional evaluation of CAC algorithms has been accomplished through simulation studies. However, there has been little research aimed at the development of a practical test bed to evaluate CAC. This research presents a practical approach: an evaluation environment for CAC algorithms centered upon an experimental test. This paper presents the architecture of the test and an evaluation of its performance. The purpose of this thesis is to build a practical flow-based admission control model, using a network test bed and to demonstrate that this model can be used to obtain reliable results.;An implementation of the scheme on a prototype router was developed and a test bed measurement study was performed. Together, they illustrate the effectiveness of the test bed.
