Abstract/Summary:
This project consisted of 2 phases: (a) the design and development of an online course and (b) the evaluation of the design. The first phase entailed the gathering, adapting and organizing of Web-based content for a community college graphic design course called "Introduction to Typography." The Web-based version of the course included tutorials, as well as instructional activities and self-assessment activities. The project was created as a response to instructional problems, such as low enrollment, lack of computer lab space, students' difficulty in obtaining the necessary software, and instructor resistance to distance learning. The work was in support of the instructor, with the researcher in the role of content developer, instructional designer and teacher's assistant. Results of the evaluation indicated that this course could be effectively delivered online, but that challenges remain. The project helped the college constituency group make recommendations for future course offerings.
