Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this qualitative study was: first, to explore and describe the health and social services for pregnant and parenting adolescents in New Brunswick; second, to explore and explain service provider's experiences with pregnant and parenting adolescents; and third, to explore and explain pregnant and parenting adolescent's experiences with services and the professionals who provide them. Eight social and health service providers, four adolescent mothers and one pregnant adolescent were interviewed. A Life Course approach was used to analyze the experiences of adolescent mothers. Key findings indicate a lack of policy and program response to pregnancy prevention, inadequate access to child care, education, gainful employment and affordable housing in New Brunswick. Policy implications of the present study and suggestions for future research are addressed.
