Abstract/Summary:
his project presents the results of the application of Quality Project Management to the implementation of an improved steel manufacturing operation of a North American steel mill. The steel mill is a manufacturer of steel concrete reinforcing bar, known in the trade as rebar. The product is the deliverable required by corporate management to realize a 5% reduction in total energy costs for 2005.;The steel mill focused on reducing energy costs through an energy-conserving technology known as hot charging for 30% of billets for 80% of the product line. Hot charging is the delivery of hot billets from the mill's caster directly to the reheat furnace that conserves energy by minimizing heat loss from billets.
