Abstract/Summary:
Geometry of the coil and the workpiece during surface induction hardening is a parameter to be taken into account to optimize the process efficiency and better control the hardness profile induced. Indeed, geometric variations such as the air gap or the thickness of the part strongly influence the electromagnetic field in the part and therefore the profile hardened. Thus, the end effect, proximity effect and the inductance of the coil pair part, affect the current distribution, the penetration depth, frequency and transmitted power.;Keywords: induction, geometry, end effect, proximity effect, hardness profile, inductance, simulation, current, frequency, power; To understand how to vary all these parameters, induction heat treatments were performed on cylinders of different geometry of steel AMS 6414. These treatments were conducted at high frequency with the induction heating machine of the ETS. The influence of these geometric variations were measured and analyzed specifically in terms of electrical parameters of the machine as the current, frequency and power and the hardness profile obtained on each cylinder. In addition, the development of numerical simulation by finite element of induction treatment led to a better understanding of the origin of these phenomena. Additional studies were performed on the hardenability of the material, as well as the influence of magnetic and electrical parameters to improve the correlation between experiment and simulation.
