Abstract/Summary:
Rural industrial communities in Nova Scotia are currently experiencing a loss of their primary economic resources. When this resource is coal mining, the region's towns and cities are threatened. This loss can lead to out-migration in the affected regions, threatening their regional identity.;The Thesis applies the ideals of critical regionalism through a network of interventions in Cape Breton designed to enhance the quality of life for all citizens. By revealing aspects of Dominion's history through landscape, and careful study of similar regions throughout the world, the thesis will show that landscape and architecture have the ability to plant seeds for the future.;This thesis is driven by a desire to understand how landscape and architecture can facilitate the cultural and industrial past of Cape Breton communities, specifically that of Dominion, Nova Scotia. This is based in the idea of honouring the past for the future of a town and a region taking steps to maintain their cultural integrity.
