The opening of ports and the establishment of concessions in modern times brought foreign goods and foreign style into Chinese society gradually. With the introduction and popularity of suits, the suit industry began to form in China.Firstly, the article studied the modern people's response to dress changes and their dressing behavior, and found that the public's prudent attitude towards new foreign affairs at that time and the inevitability of modern society's clothing change. At the beginning of the introduction of suits, there were three types of support, opposition and dialectical attitudes toward wearing suits;then the number of suit-wearers across the country increased, and at the same time the scale of the suit industry was gradually expanding. The social concerns caused by the impact of suits on traditional clothes was gradually resolved or disappeared with the development of modern cities and industries in China. On the one hand,it changed the way people wear in China, and on the other hand,it inspired our local tailors to change into suits. In practice, they created the “Shanghai-style” suit with the local characteristics that absorbed the shape and structural characteristics of the suit, combined with the aesthetics and body characteristics of the Orientals. The craftsmanship of the Chinese nation bore fruit on this exotic variety of suits. In this context, the suit industry became an important part of China's modern clothing industry.Secondly, the overall development scale of China's modern suit industry was restored and its characteristics and formation reasons were explored.Shanghai,Tianjin,Guangzhou,Nanjing,Harbin etc.were selected as the key research objects.A large number of related literature were widely investigated, including the fist-hand documents of modern suit industry collected in the Shanghai Archives,Tianjin Archives and Secondary Historical Archives of China, the local chronicles of all regions of the country collected by Jiangsu Local Chronicles Museum, and the modern newspapers and magazines in the Shanghai Library's modern newspaper database. These collected data were analyzed by relevant theories of statistics, industrial economics, and numerical analysis.Comprehensive survey, least square method and market concentration measurement method were adopted.Shanghai's modern suit industry showed the largest scale and influence. It experienced the development stages of the initiation period, development period and prosperity period, showing the overall trend from scratch, and from less to more. The number of scales was close to exponential growth with only a few stores in the initiation period, and reached the peak of more than 500 stores during the prosperous period. The scale of funds was mainly small investment, the sole proprietorship was the most and the concentration of the suit market was low. That was,the degree of monopoly was low,and the competition was fierce. It was mainly composed of the custom suit industry, while the ready-made suit industry also occupied a certain proportion.Regional comparison was made based on the relative research of these key cities' suit industry. It was found that the development of China's modern suit industry exhibited great regional differences as well as differences in the aspect of development time and growth rate of industry scale in different cities.Thirdly, the nationwide distribution pattern of the suit industry in modern China and the distribution law of suit shops in cities were explored by combining points with aspects.China's modern suit industry as a whole showed the pattern of taking Shanghai and other municipalities as regional development centers;it showed regional development differences and urban-rural development differences.Taking the Shanghai area as an example, the suit industry in the city had both agglomeration and dispersion, and the distribution of suit shops was extremely wide.Among them, the concentrated roads used to be foreign concession areas.Middle Huaihai Road had the most suit stores, followed by Nanjing Road and Sichuan Road.In addition, the suit shops scattered on the streets and lanes of Shanghai also approached half of the total number of suit industry.Suits of different grades adapted to consumers at different levels and in different regions. The establishment of the concessions after the opening of Shanghai provided a favorable external environment for the development of the suit industry. At the same time, the continuous expansion of the suit consumer group and the civilianization of suits jointly promoted the development of Shanghai's modern suit industry and its spatial pattern formation.
