Job performance has always been the focus of academic and practical circles. In the 1990s,with the introduction of the concept of emotional intelligence, the relationship between emotional intelligence and job performance has become a hotspot in the field of human resources research.Up to now,the academic circles have accumulated a large number of empirical research literature on the relationship between the emotional intelligence and job performance. However, due to the different research situations, the results of each study are not consistent, and even completely contrary to each other.Such a situation is not conducive to researchers' further exploration, but also to guiding the organization of practical activities.Based on this, this study uses meta-analysis method to summarize and re-analyze the previous research results, trying to clarify the relationship between emotional intelligence and job performance, and explores the moderating effect of occupational type on the relationship between them. This study included 79 empirical studies on emotional intelligence and job performance from 2002 to 2018.The correlation coefficient was selected as the effect value, and the general results of emotional intelligence and job performance were obtained by combining the effect value. At the same time, the relationship between emotional intelligence and job performance was verified. In addition, the types of emotional intelligence are divided into competent emotional intelligence and trait emotional intelligence. The research group is divided into eight major occupations:civil servants, service industry practitioners, managers, nurses, teachers, soldiers, sales and professional technicians.Subgroup analysis was used to test the moderating effects of occupational types. The results show that:(1)Emotional intelligence has a highly significant positive correlation with job performance(r=0.481).Emotional intelligence is an important antecedent variable of job performance and plays an important role in predicting job performance.(2)Competence emotional intelligence is highly positively correlated with task performance(r=0.420,P<0.001);Competence emotional intelligence is highly positively correlated with peripheral performance(r=0.438,P<0.001);Trait emotional intelligence is moderately positively correlated with task performance(r=0.369,P<0.001);Trait emotional intelligence is highly positively correlated with peripheral performance(r=0.482,P<0.001).P<0.001).(3)Job type has a significant moderating effect on the relationship between emotional intelligence and job performance.Among them, nurses and civil servants had the greatest moderating effect on the relationship(r=0.571,P<0.001)and the military population had the smallest moderating effect on the relationship(r=0.313,P<0.001).The results of this study clarify the relationship between emotional intelligence and job performance, and verify the moderating effect of occupational types, providing new ideas for future researchers to further study the relationship between emotional intelligence and job performance, and providing practical suggestions for improving employee job performance.
