As one of the international conferences with the deepest influence,Hongzhou G20 Summit is one of the most important conferences held by Chinese government which offers a platform for representing Chinese opinion,Chinese voice and Chinese image and Chinese solutions.The opening ceremony of Hongzhou G20 Summit is a typical kind of media event,namely,it is an artificial event which is organized by the government,designed and directed by the organizers on live television and relay.Therefore,is has the characteristic of rituality.On its basis this thesis will explore four questions concerning the opening ceremony of Hongzhou G20 Summit as follows:1.How is the opening ceremony ritually presented?2.What are the main symbols on the opening ceremony?And what are the functions of these symbols?3.What are the communicative functions of the media event of this opening ceremony?4.What are the main impacts brought about by the media communication of the opening ceremony?In the light of Ritual Theory and Semiotics we reach the conclusions through the literature analysis and multimodal analysis as follows:1.The platform with the integration of Chinese cultural elements and foreign cultural elements was built through landscape layout and stage design for getting the audiences from all over the world involved in this ceremony and building the image of China after accepting the values communicated by this ceremony.2.The linguistic symbols and visual symbols loaded with Chinese culture elements and foreign cultural elements become more accessible to the audiences from all over the world,which is conducive for the promotion of Chinese image.3.The media play an important role before and after the rituality.Before the opening ceremony there are lots of coverages which make it easier for the audiences to anticipate the ceremony.After the ceremony this rituality is relayed in order to get all the audiences involved in the "performance",to feel the solemnity and the atmosphere of this rituality and to get encouraged by the spirit conveyed by it.4.The opening ceremony of Hongzhou G20 Summit contributes a lot to the demonstration of Chinese image,the cultivation of the national spirit,elevation of Chinese values,strengthening of the national identity,enhancing of cultural confidence,and enhancing of the internal cohesion of Chinese people all over the world.The research into the opening ceremony of Hongzhou G20 Summit from the perspective of Ritual Theory offers a new perspective for the large scale opening ceremony and has a lot of implications for telling Chinese stories and spreading Chinese voice.
