New Media And Old Space: Modern Newspapers And Modern Transformation Of Chengdu Teahouses

In the end of 19th Century,the modern press and Chengdu teahouses met in the history.With the vigorous process of urban modernization,the entry of new media influenced the old teahouses space.On the press in Late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China which related with Chengdu teahouse,this paper mainly studies the news,new knowledge and new communication pattern brought by the new press media,which symbolizes modern civilization,how to promote the teahouses from the old to new modern transformation.By historical research and discourse analysis,this paper finds that the new press through discourse and embedded entity,had promoted the modern transformation of Chengdu teahouses from three dimensions:the space form,spiritual atmosphere and the pattern of information communication.Particularly,by reporting facts,spreading new knowledge,making comments and leading public opinions,the new press stepped with the authority to implement a series of sanitation transformation and order control of teahouses.Eventually,the teahouses had transformed from dirty to clean,chaotic to safe.Along with the new life movement,by criticizing the "idle" and "immoral",the press induced to purify the "backward" space atmosphere that hindered the development of the social production,and finally made the teahouses improve in the direction of civilization progress.Besides,as media of communication,the new press that entered the space had promoted the interaction between the strangers and the discussion about state affairs in the teahouses.Therefore,the original closed and restrained pattern of information communication could be more open and public toward the requirements of modern public space.Therefore,the emergence of new media has changed the relationship between people and urban space time,and thus promoted the germination and development of urban modernity.
