As the scale of higher education continues to expand and the popularization of higher education continues to advance and deepen, research on the development pattern of higher education is necessary. The development pattern of higher education is a series of processes in which the proportion of the relationship between graduate-level education,undergraduate-level education and college-level education is continuously adjusted on the basis of mutual compensation of ordinary higher education and adult higher education in order to achieve higher education and better economic and social goals.Compared with the traditional higher education development process research, the higher education development pattern research is more targeted. In the historic leap of China's higher education, ordinary higher education has assumed the main functions of popularization, especially general undergraduate education, and adult higher education has gradually declined. The scale of higher education in China is relatively large, but the level of higher education development is not high.Postgraduate education accounts for about7.16%,and general undergraduate education accounts for 44.52%,and regional disparities in higher education development are obvious. In order to further analyze the development pattern of higher education in various regions, this study divides 31 provinces and cities in China into "popularized areas"(gross enrollment rate ?50%),"post-popular areas"(gross enrollment rate of40%-50%),"popular areas"(gross enrollment rate is 15%-40%).It is found that the regions with lower gross enrollment ratios of higher education rely more on general higher education, the less developed their graduate education, the lower the level of higher education development, and the lower the quality of higher education institutions, that is,the more newly built undergraduate institutions. The contribution of undergraduate education to regions with different stages of development is basically the same, and the contribution of college education to regions with a lower gross enrollment rate of higher education is greater. The higher the regional higher education gross enrollment rate is,the more developed adult higher education is,especially the network-based college education, and "post-popular areas" and "popular areas" have higher development potential. In order to further study the coordination between regional higher education and economic and social development, this study explores from three dimensions: population development, economic development, and scientific and technological development. The study found that Shanghai,Beijing,Tianjin,Hubei,Jiangsu,Zhejiang,Shanxi,Jilin,Liaoning,Shandong and other provinces have higher matching levels, and the matching status is generally medium to high. The provinces of Fujian,Heilongjiang,Hunan,Chongqing,Anhui,Guangdong,Ningxia,Sichuan,Hebei,Shanxi and other provinces present a medium-level and low-level match. In addition, some provinces belong to different low-level matching states, including 11 provinces in Henan,Jiangxi,Hainan,Qinghai,Xinjiang,Neimenggu,Yunnan,Guangxi,Gansu, and Guizhou. It is found that the matching level of higher education and population, economic and technological development in areas with high gross enrollment rate of higher education is higher than that in areas with low gross enrollment rate, and the matching status is different.Due to the different history, different foundations, different conditions and different environments of regional higher education development,it is inevitable and objective that thereare regional differences in the development of higher education in China. This does not mean that it must be bad.The process of differential development is to a certain extent a process of survival of the fittest, and it has continuously improved the structure of higher education and the quality of higher education. The comparative analysis of different higher education development patterns is not for comparison. The ultimate goal is to understand the regional higher education development gap,and to implement the necessary control of the differential development of higher education.Without pursuing absolute balance,it is important that the development of higher education be coordinated with regional economic, population, and scientific and technological development.
