| The term “multiculturalism” which has got noticed by scholars since its appearance in the 1920 s is popular all over the world with rapid development.Be that as it may,the development of multicultural music education is slow and has a long way to go in China.Wayne Bowman,a music educator or philosopher,who is active in the field of international music education.He analyzes multicultural music education from the perspective of cutting-edge academic research,which has an enlightenment on the field of music education in China.Besides,Bowman’s cutting-edge academic research horizons can help us understand the latest developments in music education.In China,however,scholar Bowman is not so popular,and few scholars study on Bowman’s view of multicultural music education.Bowman’s book Music Education in a Changing World is a collection of 15 essays,which epitomizes his view of multicultural music education.In such a changing world with rapid development,music education better adapt to the social challenges of the new era by using the multi-cultural perspective to re-examine and organize the theoretical research and teaching practice of music education.The thesis analyzes Bowman’s multicultural music education based on the book Music Education in a Changing World.Firstly,the thesis introduces the Bowman and his related significant works as well as Bowman’s academic background and achievements.Second,the thesis combines the concepts of multiculturalism and multicultural music education and combs the concepts of multicultural music education,which will help us better understand Bowman’s multicultural music education.On this basis,this thesis analyzes Bowman’s view of multicultural music education from different aspects,such as respecting differences and tolerance,maintaining cultural characteristics,cultivating critical thinking and engaging in music practice.Then,the theoretical basis of Bowman’s multicultural music education view is further discussed,including the classification of ancient Greek academic Knowledge: Theory(theoria),Practice(Praxis),Technology(poiesis),practice in the present sense(practice)and the value judgment of practice.Finally,the practical significance of Bowman’s multicultural music education view is described in detail including the appearance of multicultural music is attributed to the music practice of different cultural environment and the connection between music and society.This thesis believes that multicultural music education from the eyes of Bowman can deepen our understanding of music education.Bowman’s concept of multicultural music education is understood from three dimensions: Firstly,multiculturalism is an important path to understand multicultural music education;second,practice is a perspective of understanding multicultural music education;third,the goal of multicultural music education is to nurture people,that is,to cultivate qualified citizens.Multicultural music education has broken the traditional way of thinking,broadened the knowledge category of music education and updated individuals’ new cognition of music education.It is worth noting that Bowman understands music education from the three dimensions of multiculturalism,practice and human beings,the significance of which lies in trying to solve the core problems that music education needs to solve today: Its significance lies in trying to solve the core problems that music education needs to solve nowadays: the dichotomy of music theory and practice,the loss of moral meaning of music practice,and the marginal position of human being in music education.The main purpose of this study is to re-understand what music education is and how to seek a global vision for the development of music education in the new era by analyzing Bowman’s view of multicultural music education. |
