The object of this paper is the Second-hand Time, which was published in 2013,written by Alexievich, winner of the 2015 Nobel Prize in Literature. In the context of the disintegration of the Soviet Union, this work tells the story of the spiritual and physical suffering suffered by people of different social strata from the Lenin period to the arrival of Yeltsin.Suffering has always been the motif of Russian literature and even world literature.Alexievich came from Belarus and was influenced by Russian literature from a young age and inherited the tradition of Russian literature suffering in a unique way. This thesis takes the work Second-hand Time as the research object, and studies the suffering of Alexievich from four aspects: narrative theme, narrative strategy, character image and artistic features. This paper consists of an introduction, four main chapters and a conclusion. The introduction part briefly introduces the writer’s life and creative experience, summarizes the research at home and abroad, and clarifies the research purpose and significance, research objects, research methods and innovations. The first chapter will combine the writer’s life experience and Russian history, thought and other factors to analyze the suffering theme in the works from the following four aspects: the anti-phasing of freedom, the collapse of faith, the broken love and the annihilation of conscience. The suffering experienced by the people of the Soviet Union is ultimately a social tragedy during the transition period of the country.Alexievich’s writing of suffering is intended to expose the truth of social reality, and reminds people of the merits of good in the process of evil. The second chapter analyzes the narrative strategy of the works.Firstly, the related concepts such as documentary literature,non-fiction literature and oral record literature are clarified. Then, the important features and significance of the narrative strategy of oral record are discussed from three aspects: authenticity, orality and popularization.Alexievich also gave the reader the historical truth through the oral form of writing, and transferred the people’s discourse power, highlighting the popular tendency of literature. The third chapter classifies the typical characters in the work Second-hand Time: the fallen political elite, the confused intellectuals and the ordinary people who are destitute.Through the shaping of typical characters, the author inherits and develops the image of marginal people, superfluous people and small people in traditional literature, and shows the fate of the masses in the period of social transformation. The fourth chapter divides the artistic features of the work into three aspects: the character language, the narrative perspective and the authorship. The colloquialization of vocabulary and sentence, the narrative perspective of the first person, and the identity of the author who is absent in both structure and content are the artistic characteristics of the work. The conclusion summarizes the full text and summarizes the theoretical and practical significance of the work.
