The inscription,named by its carrier,originated from the “Feng Bei” in the pre-Qin period.By the middle of Eastern Han dynasty,it integrated the practical functions and creative practices of many literary styles such as inscriptions,Qin stone inscriptions and Lei.Cai Yong was a master of inscriptions writing in the Han dynasty.He was known to have created 49 pieces of inscriptions,and many of his works were excellent in style.This paper tries to study Cai Yong inscriptions from four aspects: The first chapter is an overview of the background,with the goal of fully understanding about the style phase and historical background where Cai Yong and its Inscription was in,focusing on the formation process of inscription and the reasons for the prosperity of inscriptions in the Eastern Han dynasty,as well as the inscription writer group in Eastern Han dynasty and their inscription creation condition.The second chapter is an overview of the creation of Cai Yong's inscriptions.By sorting out the ancient books,the author fully understands the background,time and quantity of Cai Yong's inscriptions,and divides the writing stage of Cai Yong's inscriptions into three periods according to his life experiences,and Cai Yong's inscriptions into three categories according to the identity of the owners who the inscriptions were wrote for.The third chapter is an analysis of the artistic characteristics of Cai Yong's inscriptions.Cai Yong was very famous at that time,because of his great originality in four aspects of inscriptions: allusion,literary language,narrative technique and emotion.With nearly 2000 years of history,they are still of great value for study.The fourth chapter studies the influence of Cai Yong's inscriptions,firstly refutes the comments of scholars represented by Gu Yanwu on Cai Yong's “Yu Bei”,then analyzes the ways of appreciation of characters and the classification process of Cai Yong's inscriptions,and affirms Cai Yong's status as a milestone in the history of inscription literature.
