This thesis makes a research on the two scope adverbs "Dou"(?)and "quan"(?)which are similar in usage and meaning in modern Chinese.Firstly,the two scope adverbs are described and analyzed from three aspects:syntactic features,semantic features and pragmatic constraints.In terms of syntax,"dou"(?)and"quan"(?)have the characteristics of modifying and restricting verbs and adjectives."dou"(?)can also modify pronouns and quantifiers,and "quun"(?)can modify nouns.In terms of semantics,the semantic features of the scope adverb "dou"(?)and "uan"(?)are all inclusive,but "quan"(?)focuses on the general object as a whole.In terms of pragmatic constraints,the scope adverbs "dou"(? and "quan"(?)all have the feature of "subjective mass",and the all-inclusive objects of "dou"(?)and "quan"(?)must be definite.Secondly,this paper discusses the exchange and co-occurrence of "dou"(?)and "quan"(?)and examines their diachronic evolution,from which it analyzes the deep-seated reasons for their coexistence in modern Chinese.Finally,combined with the errors made by foreign students in using these two scope adverbs,this paper puts forward some corresponding suggestions,suggesting that teachers should explain accurately and pay attention to comparison and distinction;the compilation of teaching materials should be carried out step by step;increase the amount of exercises;teachers improve their knowledge and accomplishment;targeted teaching;students should pay attention to interlingual and intralingual contrast;maintain a positive learning attitude.
