Since its birth,Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature has been carrying the significance beyond the history of literature because of its close correlation with social trends. The significance has been further strengthened since the founding of the people’s Republic of China in 1949.The writing of Modern and Contemporary Chinese literature history in the 1950 s and 1960 s is based on this, and under the background of the special times in the early days of the founding of New China,it presents unique characteristic of institutionalized writing.Wang Yao’s "History of Chinese New Literature" is the first general history of Modern Chinese literature, which is launched after the founding of The People’s Republic of China. His practice of examining and expounding the development of modern literature with Mao Zedong’s literary and artistic thought as the theoretical resource represents the collective pursuit of the historians in the 1950 s and1960s.Under the guidance of Mao Zedong’s theory of literature and art, from Wang Yao’s works to the collective compilation of New Chinese Literature(trial-print)by the Institute of Literature of the Chinese Academy of Sciences,The modern and contemporary chinese literary historical works of the 1950s and 1960 s are characterized by an institutionalized writing. This feature is concentrated in two aspects. On the one hand, the same view, similar logical structure, opposite and hierarchical arrangement of writers’ works, these constitute the writing mode of institutionalized writing. On the other hand, the institutionalized writing can be internalized by writers conscious following of the writing mode. The fundamental reason for the formation of institutionalized writing lies in the fact that the educational system of colleges and universities under the guidance of the Soviet Model provides a platform and institutional guarantee. This makes the specialty become the foundation of talent training, the subject of Modern and Contemporary Chines Literature uses the teaching plan, the syllabus to carry on the unified plan, and takes the teaching group as the unit to carry on the collective academic research. The literary history of the Soviet Union, which was introduced as a model of literary history, provided a model for the writing of modern and contemporary chineseliterature history at that time, from the guiding concept to the structural arrangement. At the same time, the consolidation of authority in literary history caused by the change from individual to collective identity and the inundation of individualvoice have further consolidated and continued the institutionalized writing. It is this kind of institutionalized writing,so that The People’s Republic of China has established a relatively complete subject formation within a short period of ten years. And it strengthens the historical characteristics of the writing of Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature History, and preserves abundant data of literary history. But,because of its increasingly rigid writing model,as well as the requirements of writing, the qualification of the author’s identity, the Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature literary history books of the 1950 s and 1960 s became narrow, vague and even false. With arrival of “the Great Cultural Revolution”,institutionalized writing must be interrupted.
