The study of acoustic landscapes has gradually garnered widespread attention in the literary community. The inevitable trend in the development of novels is the extensive utilization of acoustic landscapes as a significant literary technique. This thesis focuses on the acoustic landscapes in novels from the 1950s to the 1960s,exploring the historical and cultural contexts(political, revolutionary, and local)that shaped the acoustic landscapes in the literature of that period. These sounds ultimately point to the active participation of the entire population in the construction of the great socialist country during the early stages of its establishment. The depiction of sounds in novels also serves specific functions and holds literary historical significance, providing valuable insights for understanding and interpreting history. The structure of this thesis consists of four parts, primarily delving into the historical and cultural contextual interpretation, textual presentation, functions, and meanings of acoustic landscapes in novels from the 1950s to the 1960s.In the first part, this thesis provides a detailed introduction to the creative background of novels in the 1950s to the 1960s,highlighting the influence of the voice of the era, political discourse, and traditional culture on novel creation.Furthermore, this thesis categorizes the novels of that period into three major themes:rural, revolutionary history, and industrial, revealing that the sounds in the novels ultimately converge to depict the blueprint of a modernized China. In the second part, this thesis explores the role of acoustic landscapes in depicting the social conditions and expressing the thoughts of the masses in novels from the 1950s to the 1960s.Specifically,the natural acoustic landscapes, the sounds of struggle, and the sounds of construction play crucial roles in the novels. This thesis argues that the establishment of a connection between the emitted sounds and the society in the works establishes a certain "rational" link, making it a symbolic sound that represents the social conditions. Moreover, the descriptions of sounds in novels within the context of the era are closely related to the dynamics of public thoughts, serving as an important means of expressing the thoughts of the masses and conveying the voice of the times. In the third part, this thesis focuses on the functions and meanings of acoustic landscapes in novels from the 1950s to the 1960s,providing a macroscopic analysis of the political and aesthetic functions that sounds possess. It reveals the textual significance and literary historical significance carried by sounds in novels during that period. This thesis argues that as an important element in the text, sound not only serves the function of describing reality and shaping images but, more importantly, holds a significant position and meaning in literary history. In the conclusion, this thesis reiterates the indispensable nature of sound as a factor in eras and nations, holding an irreplaceable position. The artistic and aesthetic aspects of listening are inherent properties of sound itself. To listen to the sounds in a work is to discover its artistic and aesthetic qualities. The instantaneous existence, uncertain expression, activation of imagination, and appreciation of pure art establish a certain connection between sound and the pursuit of modernity. Thus, the study of acoustic landscapes becomes an important theoretical approach to explore the aesthetic modernity of novels from the 1950s to the 1960s,reminding us to pay attention to the sounds present in works and guiding us to discover the meanings behind these sounds.
