Based on R.Oxford's strategy inventory for language learning and the reading strategies often used by Chinese learners in Myanmar,this paper designs a questionnaire.By use of questionnaire,interviews and SPSS statistical analysis,this paper intends to study the reading strategies of 103 non-ethnic Chinese learners of the second year to the fourth year from the Chinese Department of Mandalay Foreign Language University.The significance of this paper is to understand the non-ethnic Chinese basic learners who have only begun to learn Chinese after the University,how to improve their Chinese reading ability in a short period of time.This paper aims to improve the reading skills of non-ethnic Chinese learners and also help them to advance both their reading strategies and their reading efficiency.The conclusions of this paper are as follow:The basic level non-ethnic Chinese learners frequently use Metacognitive strategy and Affective strategy.On the other hand,the pre-intermediate and intermediate learners like to use Compensation strategy and Metacognitive strategy respectively.We also found that the Affective strategy is most fiequently used by the excellent non-ethnic Chinese learners.The ordinary non-ethnic Chinese learners and the lower level non-ethnic Chinese like to use the Metacognitive strategy.In addition,the paper also found that reading strategy most commonly used by the non-ethnic Chinese learners is the Metacognitive strategy.The frequency of Chinese Reading strategies is“medium frequency",the usage of Chinese Reading strategies is "sometimes used",and the Memory strategy is the lowest frequency used by all different levels of non-ethnic Chinese learners.There are some differences in the use of reading strategies among non-ethnic Chinese learners of different Chinese proficiency and gender.However,there is no statistically significant difference in the overall use of the reading learning strategy.Finally,based on the findings of this study,the paper puts forward some suggestions for non-ethnic Chinese learners and Chinese teachers in Myanmar.Suggestions for non-ethnic Chinese learners include:try to use various effective Chinese Reading learning strategies such as Memory strategy;make full use of Metacognitive strategy and Affective strategy.Suggestions for Chinese teachers include:the Chinese textbooks shall be used in conformity with the Chinese level of the learners;the teachers should give guidance to the learners to use Chinese reading learning strategies.
