Abstract/Summary:
Narcissism is a common phenomenon in the normal population, with exaggerated self-concepts,and is eager to be affirmed and appreciated by the outside world. There are two types of narcissism, explicit narcissism and implicit narcissism.Dominant narcissists have a positive attitude and superiority towards their skills and authority.Invisible narcissists feel inferior and sensitive to others’ evaluations, and their sense of self-worth often depends on the attention or affirmation of others. Some studies have found that both explicit narcissistic and implicit narcissism are difficult to truly empathize with others. But in different situations, the prosocial behavior of different types of narcissists will change. For example,in an open situation, narcissists may adopt a pro-social behavior as a self-improvement strategy, perhaps because prosocial behavior allows them to show themselves and cause concern. Therefore, this study sets the public situation by simulating real life situations and affects people’s behavior through different situations.Previous studies have found that public contexts affect people’s prosocial behavior. So for different types of narcissism, does the public situation affect its prosocial behavior? Therefore, this study conducted two experiments to explore the relationship between the prosocial behaviors of different types of narcissists and the reasons for their changes in the public context. In the first experiment,124 qualified college students were selected as subjects, including 62 people in the open situation group(dominant narcissism 31,recessive narcissism 31),and 62 in the anonymous situation group(dominant narcissism 31,implicit narcissism).31).The experimental independent variables are different situations(public situation / anonymous situation)× narcissist(dominant narcissist / recessive narcissist),and the dependent variable is the number of experiments that the experimental experiment invites the task participants to participate voluntarily.Experiment 2 on the basis of Experiment 1,explore the reasons for the changes in prosocial behavior of different types of narcissists in the open/anonymous context from the perspective of social rejection and self-worth.The results show that:(1)In the public context, there is no significant difference in prosocial behavior between dominant narcissists and recessive narcissists.(2)In an anonymous situation, the recessive narcissists have less prosocial behavior.(3)In the public context, under the control of exclusion, the prosocial behavior of differenttypes of narcissists is not significant.(4)Compared with dominant narcissists, recessive narcissists have a higher sense of self-worth.Conclusion: Relatively anonymous situations, implicit narcissists show more prosocial behavior in public situations without fear of being excluded, perhaps because of their high sense of self-worth.
