Abstract/Summary:
Portrait,as one form of the figure-painting category,takes up a big role in Chinese painting history.As the portrait usually depicts clear,artistic and functional subjects,it is well liked by painters throughout the past thousands years.Ren Bonian’s portrait,as a typical representative of the portraits in the Qing dynasty,is signified by its multiple styles in terms of the unique painting language and also the liveliness in people’s life.Portrait painting takes up a big portion in the artistic activities of Ren bonian,and his characterized painting style runs through different periods of his career.This paper focuses on Ren bonian’s portrait paintings and analyses different periods of Ren bonian evolution portrait art characteristics and style by the image data combined with literature,painting theory and art practice,case study and the overall analysis and comparative research method to a specific analysis.Firstly this paper will discuss the origin of Chinese portrait painting and the development process of all previous dynasties portraits.Then it will show the distinctive glamour of figure painting master Ren bonian in the Qing dynasty portrait by detailed analysis in following four chapters.The first chapter starts with the Ren bonian’s life,shows his path from inheriting from family to learning form several tutors.Then it discusses and summarizes his learning attitude traditional portrait technique in aspects of modeling,pen and ink and absorbing from folk art.The second chapter is how Ren bonian is influenced by the new trend of fusion of Chinese and western.Ren bonian adsorbs nutrition from the classical tradition and refines the portrait of the conceptual design and painting.He has made a great innovation and improvement in aspects of the traditional stylized character image,composition,painting language.He merges western painting skills into Chines portraits without breaking traditional Chinese artistic conception.The third chapter explores Ren bonian portrait in two aspects which are inheritance and innovation.And it also summarizes and induces characters of his portrait in different periods through the way of graphics combination and comparison research.In the last chapter,it affirms Ren bonian’ important role in the history of figure painting,achievements in the field of portraiture and influence on the painting history basing on specific analysis and research in previous three chapters.
