William Frederick Mayers(1831-1878)was a British diplomat and sinologist in China during the reign of the Qing dynasty.He had been in China for 20 years(1859-1878),and during this period,he published hundreds of articles on such journals as The Chinese Review,Notes and Queries on China and Japan.At the time,he compiled different kinds of books to introduce China to the people in the west in all aspects.He made a great contribution to cultural exchanges between China and western countries.It is worth mentioning that he published the articles which were named " Bibliographical Notes on Chinese Books " on Notes and Queries on China and Japan in 1867,a number of classical Chinese literary works have been introduced to the west.It also has deep research value under the background of "Chinese academics spread to the west".In this paper,the author has a specific analysis of the bibliography,especially explored the purpose and the reason of its specific composition and characteristics.The key to research is studying the articles from the perspective of bibliography.The author also wants to compare the bibliography with the Chinese literature bibliography which complied by the contemporary westerners.Simultaneously,the author compares the bibliography with the traditional Chinese literature bibliography.And through the analysis of the differences between Chinese and Western in bibliographies and "view of novels" in particular,the author explores the influence and meaning to cultural exchange in Chinese and Western.
