The Renaissance of the Twelfth Century promoted the renaissance and spread of classical culture in the Latin Christian world. With the rise of the university, the Faculty of Arts has become the dissemination field of the humanities discipline, and the liberal education has rapidly developed in the Faculty of Arts.As a basic faculty of the medieval university, the Faculty of Arts occupies a very important position in the university. As the Faculty of Arts itself, its teaching content involves the learning represented by the Liberal Arts and Aristotle, which have been inherited from the classical times. These studies have a great influence on the education process of the medieval university. Therefore,I believe that the study of the Faculty of Arts is conducive to a deeper understanding of medieval university education. This thesis attempts to study the Faculty of Arts of European universities on the basis of relevant research by scholars at home and abroad, focusing on the 12-15 th century Paris University and Oxford University. In addition to the introduction and conclusion, this thesis is divided into four chapters. The first chapter analyzes the social and cultural background of the rise of the Faculty of Arts. The Renaissance of the Twelfth Century led to the renaissance of classical culture and the introduction of foreign advanced culture and the rise of universities. Therefore, the Faculty of Arts has become the main position of liberal education. The second chapter discusses the position of the Faculty of Arts in the medieval universities and its internal management. As a basic faculty of the medieval university, the Faculty of Arts occupies a very important position in the university. The Liberal Arts has become a basic compulsory course for undergraduates.Only through the study of the Faculty of Arts can it be qualified to enter other advanced faculties.Artistic scholars have become leaders in university management. Its internal management is mainly reflected in the management requirements for students and teachers. On the one hand, students need to register for enrollment in the name of a teacher, mainly to follow this teacher’s study, and complete academic qualifications prescribed by the faculty. After the exam is passed, they can truly graduate;on the other hand, the faculty has developed a series of ordinances. It is used to regulate the behavior of teachers in teaching activities, academic freedom, personal morality, and other aspects. The third chapter discusses the teaching system of the Faculty of Arts.In the mid-13 th century, the Faculty of Arts formed a curriculum system based on the Liberal Arts― and the Three Philosophies‖ of Aristotle. In the 14th-15 th century,Aristotle’s logic and natural philosophy took a dominant position. The traditional arts disciplines have been incorporated into a broader range of knowledge. In terms of teaching methods, arts teachers mainly adopt teaching methods and arguments. If students in the Faculty of Arts want to obtain bachelor’s and master’s degrees, they must listen to the lectures of the designated book and complete the corresponding argumentation tasks. The fourth chapter explores the issues of the Faculty of Arts and liberal education.I mainly discusses the influence of the Faculty of Arts on the contemporary thought of the era—mainly reflected in the revival and dissemination of classical culture and the rapid development of medieval humanistic thought.
