Zi-centered theory is a new linguistic theory. It was found when the Ci-centered theory hasbeen perfect and mature relatively and there has always been an argument about it. On the onehand, it has been praised because it researches the features of Chinese and it has been used inthe activity of teaching Chinese as a foreign language. On the other hand, it has been criticizedbecause of its illness. There are few objective judgments on Zi-centered theory and all of thejudgments analyze the problem using theoretical method. And thus, how to judge Zi-centeredtheory has become a problem without answers.As for a new linguistic theory, it must be put into practice so that we can find whether it isreasonable and just. And we can find out the reason why it is not reasonable and just. That'sbecause practice is the sole criterion for testing truth. The activity of children's recognizingChinese characters is also a practical activity. Researching Zi-centered theory from it may be abetter method than others.Considering the children's physiological and psychological features, we can conclude thatchildren have the ability to recognize Chinese characters, which is the practicability of thisresearch. And enough findings about children's recognizing Chinese characters are the basis ofthe research. The research on the activity of children's recognizing Chinese characters uses themethod of combining the observation and interview. It based on a deep, comprehensive andlasting tracking research on a child. And meanwhile, it contains the situations of many otherchildren's recognizing Chinese characters that are also3old years and taught in different ways.Then, the situations of so many children's recognizing Chinese characters can tell us the mainfeatures of Chinese language and characters. That's the key to the research.After finding out the main features of Chinese language and characters, the research goesfrom the shallower to the deeper. The shallower part named The Shallow Research on Zi-centeredTheory and the deeper part named The Deep Research on Zi-centered Theory. The formercontains three parts: What do the Scholars Think of Zi-centered Theory, What did XuTongqiang Think of “Zi” and Comparing Distinguishing Features of Chinese Language andCharacters to Xu Tongqiang's Opinion. In this part, it proved two important things. One is thatthere is realistic basis for Xu Tongqiang's Zi-centered theory, which can be found in the activityof children's recognizing the Chinese characters. The other is Xu Tongqiang's opinion doesn'tmatch the distinguishing features of Chinese which are reflected by the practice of children'srecognizing Chinese characters. That's the advantage and the disadvantage which Zi-centeredTheory shows. The latter goes further in the light of the conclusion from the former and can bedivided into two parts, the advantage and the disadvantage. In this part, we can see that no precise in writing makes a lot of mistakes in Xu Tongqiang's Zi-centered theory. Many scholarshave made great efforts to solve the problem and made great success, too. But there hasn't beena common understanding about the question of “Zi” and “Ci”. At the end of the research, wecan find that we should regard “Zi” as characters and “Ci” is the basic unit of spoken Chinese.The research tells us many. First,“Zi” in Zi-centered theory is Chinese characters, and theheart of Zi-centered theory is to study Chinese by means of studying Chinese characters.Second, some opinions of Zi-centered theory can be proved by the activity of children'srecognizing Chinese characters?“word” in the Chinese community has psychological reality,“Zi” in spoken Chinese and written Chinese have the same name,“Zi” is ready-made anddisperse, and “Zi” is the place where voice is connected to meaning. All above show thatZi-centered theory is based on the characteristics of Chinese. If we regard “Zi” as charactersand acknowledge “Ci” is an important unit in Chinese, many problems will be solved. Thecontradictions between the “conclusions” and the “opinions of Xu Tongqiang” will be wiped off.Zi-centered theory will be improved as well. And the Chinese own linguistic theory will play agreat part in directing the research and practice.
