Clinical Observation On The Treatment Of Obese Polycystic Ovary Syndrome With Acupuncture And Medicine

BackgroundPolycystic Ovarian Syndrome(PCOS)is one of the most common gynaecological endocrine disorder.Most women seek treatment for PCOS,presenting with menstrual irregularities or infertility needs as their main complaint clinically.A common feature in PCOS patients is obesity.In the Asian context,BMI greater than 24kg/m2 is considered to be overweight.It is commonly known that overweight or obesity can worsen endocrinological disorder and increase potential health risks like diabetes,high cholesterol or even endometrial carcinoma.Therefore,PCOS patients who are overweight or obese requires more medical attention.As the etiology of PCOS is still unknown till date,it still poses as a great challenge f-or medical practitioners,be it for Western Medicine or Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM).ObjectiveThe aim of this study is to observe the combination curative effect of TCM herbs and acupuncture in treating overweight or obese PCOS patients who also fulfilled both the Phlegm and Kidney deficiency TCM syndrome as well.The study group was given both acupuncture and moxibustion treatment with oral medication of BuShenHuaTan formula.The control group was set up with patients who consumed BuShenHuaTan formula only.The study was set up in attempt to explore the mechanism of the combined effect of acupuncture,moxibustion and TCM formula in hope to provide a more effective treatment plan for PCOS.MethodA total of 40 patients who fulfilled both the western medicine and TCM syndrome diagnosis criteria for PCOS were included in this study.They were randomly divided into 2 groups.The study group was given acupuncture and moxibustion treatment with BuShenHuaTan Formula.The control group was given BuShenHuaTan Formula only.BuShenHuaTan Formula was prescribed to nourish the kidney,remove phlegm and improve blood circulation to regulate menstrual cycle in TCM context.We will record patients'menstrual cycles,weight,BMI,waist circumference,WHR,blood glucose levels,insulin levels,HDL,LDL,TC,TG,sex hormones levels including T,LH,LH/FSH,symptoms score and pregnancy outcomes,after which we will compare the results between both groups.Due to personal and work reasons,3 patients dropped out of the study.A total of 37 patients completed the study.Result1.After treatment,menstrual cycles of both the study and control group were shortened,P<0.01,the difference was statistically different.Comparing the menstrual cycles of both groups after treatment,the study group showed greater improvement,P<0.05,the difference was statistically significant.The study group effectiveness in regulating menstrual cycles was 94.4%,while the control group was 73.7%,the difference was statistically different.2.Both the study group and control group showed great improvement after treatment in terms of patients' weight,BMI,waist circumference and WHR,P<0.01,the difference was statistically significant.Comparing both groups in terms of weight,BMI,waist circumference after treatment,P>0.05,the difference was not statistically significant.However,the decrease was seen to be more significant in the study group.After treatment,the study group was more effective in terms of reducing WHR,P>0.01,the difference was statistically different.3.The TCM symptom scores showed improvements after treatment in both groups,P<0.01,the difference was statistically significant.However,when comparing between both groups,P>0.05.The overall effectiveness in the study group was 100%,while in the control group was 68.4%,the difference was statistically different.4.No significant changes were observed in blood glucose,insulin,HDL,LDL,TG,TC,T,LH,LH/FSH levels for both the study and control group.No significant differences were observed between both groups as well.5.The study group had 7 patients who become pregnant during treatment,5 clinical pregnancy,1 biochemical pregnancy and 1 abortion.In the study group,there are 5 clinical pregnancy.Conclusion1.The combination of BuShenHuaTan Formula with Acupuncture and Moxibustion was observed to be effective in terms of shortening menstrual cycles,weight loss,reducing BMI,waist circumference?WHR and TCM symptom scores.2.The combined curative effect was proved to be more effective in shortening menstrual cycles,reducing WHR and improving TCM symptom score effectiveness rate as compared to the sole use of BuShenHuaTan Formula3.With the addition of Acupuncture and Moxibustion treatment,it was observed the difference in between both groups in terms of patients' weight loss,reduction of BMI and waist circumference was not statistically significant.However,the reduction was observed to be greater in the study group,suggesting that the combination of acupuncture and TCM medication may still be more effective as compared to the sole use of TCM medication.4.No therapeutic effect was observed for both the combination of acupuncture,moxibustion and TCM medication or the sole use of TCM medication in terms of blood glucose,insulin,HDL,LDL,TG,TC,T,LH,LH/FSH levels.5.From the results obtained,suggests that the combined curative effect of acupuncture,moxibustion and BuShenHuaTan formula improves PCOS patients' condition most probably by aiding them in losing weight.
