At present,China is in the period of economic growth shifting,industrial upgrading and transformation,innovation driven gradually replaced by resource driven,investment driven and other driving ways to become an important way to achieve industrial technology upgrading.In the highly competitive market environment,the innovation path and knowledge acquisition model of manufacturing are important factors.Because of technology complexity,technological innovation uncertainty,and demand intensification,technology innovation is characterized by complexity,systematicness and social collaborativenss,thus posing a challenge for an individual enterprise with limited resources.To overcome the above difficulties,growing numbers of individual enterprises turn to external organizations for cooperation by establishing jointly R&D institutions to achieve technology upgrade.Under the above background,the research on the path of technological upgrading based on cooperative R&D has practical significance to realize the technological upgrading of China's manufacturing industry.In this paper,the role of cooperative R&D in manufacturing technology upgrading is taken as the breakthrough point while also based on the analysis of the theory of cooperative R&D and industrial technology upgrading.This paper uses China's manufacturing industry data from 2005-2015 to analyze the impact of two innovation strategies,the industry-university-institute cooperative and inter-firm cooperation.The results shows that,in the overall sample of manufacturing industry,the technological innovation path of industry-university-research cooperative is better than that of inter-firm ones.That means in the era of competition globalization and knowledge economy,cooperative R&D among various subjects is imperative.However,the cooperation between enterprises due to its loose contract and partners trust issues is less effective for the manufacturing technology upgrading.The effective absorption and transfer of knowledge by members is the key to the sustainable and stable operation of R&D,and the key to realize the upgrading of manufacturing technology.With the enhancement of knowledge spillover absorption and digestion ability,the two technological innovation paths both have enhanced the role of technological upgrading of manufacturing industry.In terms of manufacturing group study,there is heterogeneity among different factor intensive industries,which means we shouldn't treat all the industries the same way.For the capital and technology intensive manufacturing industries,the path of cooperative R&D,especially the industry-university-institute cooperative,is conducive to the realization of industrial technology upgrading.For labor and resource intensive industries,the effect of cooperative R&D on technological upgrading is not significant,and the upgrading of labor and industry scale is conducive to the upgrading and development of its industry.According to the above analysis,it can provide relevant policy recommendations for the upgrading of China's manufacturing industry.At the present stage,cooperative R&D path is a good strategic choice,at the same time,the ability to absorb and transfer knowledge should be enhanced.
