In order to study the construction of media image of women of childbearing age by news media under the “universal two-child policy”,this paper takes the news report related to this topic published on comprehensive news websites during the 18 quarters between Q3 of 2015 and Q4 of 2019 as the research object, and carries out comparative analysis with articles regarding other topics on the same platform as control group. The research combines methods of content analysis, word frequency analysis and text analysis, and analyzes the three levels of media image construction layer by layer, namely, the topic orientation, text structure and media image presentation of reports related to the media image of women of childbearing age, from the perspective of balanced reporting.According to the research results, this paper explores the media image construction of women of childbearing age by news media and the presenting characteristics, and discusses their balance. The research found that, when constructing the media image of women of childbearing age, although the reports have a good grasp of the balance between the presentation of two-sided factors and source citation at the micro operation level, they are “imbalanced” in the dimensional and hierarchical construction of images, mainly reflecting in the presentation and elaboration of the collective value of fertility and the individual value of females, hints of the support demands from the public level and the family level, and identity selection of the females of childbearing age.The reasons for these mainly include the concentration of interview places, the professional ignorance of the internal connection of social events, the media's disregard for non-public issues, gender cognition lag and unequal distribution of discourse power.Based on the research results, this paper puts forward suggestions on the strategic optimization of the report on fertility under the “universal two-child policy”.
