Mixer is the key module in wireless communication front ends,which is used to achieve the frequency conversion of signal link.With the shrinking nano-size of silicon-based technology and the increasing frequency of transistors,the design technology of high-performance millimeter-wave mixer is also continuously updated.By tracking the research dynamics of mixers,this article summarizes and describes the mixer circuit design in terms of basic frequency conversion principles,classification and performance comparison of mixers,core indicators,and engineering experience.The basic circuit topology,advantages and disadvantages of the mixer are analyzed,and several optimization design techniques are introduced on the application of electromagnetic coupling in the design of a millimeter wave mixer.Based on 65nm CMOS technology,a zero-IF fundamental wave mixer for W-band high-speed radar RF front-end chip was designed.In order to meet the requirements of the system link for low voltage,high linearity and high gain,a non-transconductance cascode cascaded common source IF amplifier with high gain characteristics is adopted.Meanwhile,in order to reduce the deterioration of the isolation and balance of the coupling between the signals In the overall layout of the layout,a fully symmetrical design that divides the wiring into two parts above and below the ground plane is adopted.when the power supply voltage is 1V and the PLO is 0dBm,this design satisfies that its input IP1dB is not less than 3dBm,the frequency conversion voltage gain reaches 5-6dB,and the isolation and balance are also good.In addition,in order to reduce the requirements for large local oscillator signals,a third harmonic zero-IF mixer based on 65nm CMOS technology is designed for radar phased array chip.This mixer has the characteristics of low voltage,high gain and low power consumption.in order to compare the performance of the fundamental wave mixer to the published harmonic mixers,the same structure as the fundamental wave mixer is adopted.when the power supply voltage also is 1V and the PLO is-3.2dBm,the mesurement result satisfies that its input IP1dB is not less than-0.5dBm.In addition,the isolation and power consumption are better than the fundamental Mixer.
