Analysis Of The "China Threat Theory" In Economic Reports Of The New York Times

2019 is the 40 th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States.However,the past 2018 has been the most difficult year for economic and trade relations since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States.The Trump government provoked the biggest trade war against China in 40 years,advocated the "China Threat Theory" again,regarded China as the first competitor threatening its world hegemony,and constantly created trade friction to oppress China.A new round of "China Threat Theory" is coming fiercely.Although its core connotation still holds that China's development is a threat to other countries,it still has its new characteristics in the context of the new era.Understanding the harmony and characteristics of the new round of "China Threat Theory",eliminating the negative influence and establishing a positive international image of China are the required courses for China to improve its international status and expand its international influence.Based on 405 China-related economic reports of the New York Times in 2018,this paper makes data statistics from five aspects: length of coverage,type of coverage,layout,mode of coverage and theme of coverage.It finds that the New York Times in 2018 pays more attention to China's economic development and has a longer coverage,including Sino-US trade war,China's economic development,Chinese enterprises and multinational corporations.Operating in China,etc.Through sorting out the economic reports on different topics,it is found that although the New York Times' economic reports on China follow the principle of journalistic professionalism,they still show certain tendencies,with a large number of descriptions of "China threat".Based on the analysis of the report texts and the description of "China Threat" on the topics of Sino-US trade war,sanction revival,Chinese enterprises and multinational enterprises,this paper finds that the economic reports of the New York Times describes China as a potential threat of irregularity,and seeks a reasonable excuse for the United States to launch a trade war.With the intensification of the trade war,The New York Times calls China's response and counter-measures retaliation and threats against the United States.Today,China has strong economic strength,and the future trend of trade war is not optimistic for the United States.The rapid development of Chinese science and technology enterprises is a threat to the United States.In order to protect intellectual property rights and safeguard national security interests,the United States has to take repressive measures.The development of Chinese national enterprises has also made the development of American multinational enterprises in China encounter difficulties.By sorting out the exposition of "China Threat",this paper tries to summarize the views of New York Times on "China Threat Theory" : China's "economic aggression","technology coercion","enterprise counterbalance".This paper holds that the new round of "China Threat Theory" is manifested in more diverse forms,and new concepts such as "sharp power","revisionist state" and "creditor's rights imperialism" have emerged.Compared with the past,the new round of "China Threat Theory" has a deeper connotation.It is more about declaring to the world that China has the strength of the Western countries and a layer of fear for China's strength.Meaning.In addition,the new round of "China Threat Theory" covers a wider range of fields.Within the scope of China's economic threat theory,it also derives from China's economic aggression,China's technological threat,China's enterprise threat and other levels.This paper holds that,in any case,the new round of "China Threat Theory" is a repetition of the old-fashioned stereotype.It is a reality manifestation of the transformation of China strategy under the guidance of the "American Priority" concept.It is also a public opinion offensive launched by the United States to launch a trade war.It is also the imagination of the United States of America's own "China Threat".For China,how to deal with the "China Threat Theory" is an old topic,but it is also an important topic worthy of consideration and research.We should express Chinese opinion rationally in international society,tell Chinese stories well,enhance the international influence of Chinese media,give full play to the role of Chinese think tanks,prove China's vision of building a better world with practical actions,and eliminate the negative impact of "China Threat Theory".
